Logitech G15 and WinAmp

While fumbling around with the G15 gaming keyboard I found a new patch (1.04) that made my LCD wake up after sleep. Lets hope this actually works. . . I also snagged Ray's G15 WinAmp plugin from here: http://www.g15-applets.de/download.php?id=88 very nice utility, you can navigate your playlist from the LCD panel Very cool. While I was at it, I figured I'd get the media keys working with WinAmp, and found that by default WinAmp has the media keys disabled. Launch Winamp Select Options -> Preferences... Under General Preferences select Global Hotkeys Place a check in the box labeled Enabled Click the Close button

Google Maps Looses It's Way :p

I was looking up the place: University At Buffalo Center for the Arts  So, I put it into maps.google.com , and low and behold it gives me this: University At Buffalo Center For The Arts (Might want to copy that to the buffer so you can cut and paste it...) Address: Unverified listing - - more info University at Buffalo 103 Center For The Arts, Buffalo, NY 14260, USA (716) 645-6259  Note, for some reason this is in Kansas?! Odd.. Anyways, for fun, lets map directions...  In the destination put in the same place (University At Buffalo Center For The Arts), and for start location, I used a few Canadian postal codes, but you can use m1m1m1 (sorry if that’s someone’s postal…)  Google replies "University At Buffalo Center for the Arts We could not understand the location: University At Buffalo Center for the Arts Suggestions: Make sure all street and city names are spelled correctly. Make sure your address includes a city and state. Try entering a zip code." Sorry?...

Feisty 7.04 on Dell D620 Gotchas...

Various problems getting it all working.. Needless to say. 1) Get Envy 0.9.3 this will take care of your nvidia drivers 2) Run a bit depth of 24 (By default, in the screen section of xorg.conf) 3) Backup and rename the file sudo /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-storage-policy.fdi to be able to unplug USB mass storage devices (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-mount/+bug/99538) 4) In the BIOS make sure you are using USB 2.0 only, using the 1.1 as well will not allow Ubuntu to detect USB mass storage devices. 5) XGL in Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-beryl-with-latest-nvidia-drivers-in-ubuntu-feisty-fawn.html 6) Troubleshooting XGL - http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Troubleshooting_nVidia

RAR decompression for Ubuntu Feisty

Apple iPod FTW

I finally caved and bought an iPod. After plugging it in and dumping some songs using iTunes I was a little confused with the menus -- too many options, and why read the manuals... It quickly became apparent I'd be using the playlists option a lot. :) iTunes allows you to create smart playlists, these things are insane. You can filter out and not listen to songs you've skipped twice (or once) before, or only play songs you haven't heard in 30 days. It's simple, but powerful. I was really impressed by this. When you plug it into your computer, the iPod (If properly configured) can act as a hard drive that you can just dump data too, however, to actually playback music and video you need to register it with the iPod's internal database (Use iTunes -- Turn off that auto sync stuff though) it's VERY handy to have mass storage everywhere you go (Providing you bring your USB cable) Movie playback is good, but you for best results rip and encode your own DVDs, the qual...

Speeding up Vista's network speed

If your using Vista and you have poor network performance, it could be the addition of a new feature called "Receive Window Auto-Tuning" in the TCP/IP stack. To check the status of this feature, from a command prompt run: netsh interface tcp show global You should see something like: Querying active state… TCP Global Parameters ———————————————- Receive-Side Scaling State : enabled Chimney Offload State : enabled Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level : disabled Add-On Congestion Control Provider : none ECN Capability : disabled RFC 1323 Timestamps : disabled In this example, you can see I have it disabled. The default is "Normal" on a 100mbit network, when I disabled this "feature", I went from 3mb/s to almost 5mb/s. These need to be run from an Administrator Command Prompt (Right click on the command prompt, click on "Run as administrator" for a pretty picture see http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows_Vista_run_command_prompt_as_administrator-t146674...

Some things I neglected to mention when buying a kitty... 1) Transportation kennel thinige 2) Spray bottle(s) -- I bought 3 (Check the dollar store) 3) Stone Skin level 4 4) Patience by the bucket Of all the things I've bought, I think Sado likes his chinese plastic soup spoon the most, and the RC car the ABSOLUTE worst. He hisses when I drive it around. I've also used broken down old boxes to make barriers around my computers so that he doesn't chew on the wires And last, an online album! Check the on the right hand side under "Links" for "My kitten Sado" ------------>

New Kitten Considerations

For all those out there that are also considering getting a kitten or cat, here are some things to think about before making the purchase. If your thinking about buying a kitten, you may want to also consider getting one from a shelter. This not only saves money, but saves lives. google "yourcity Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" would be a good start. If your thinking about declawing, you may want to reconsider, see www.declawing.com for more information. Some things to ask before you buy (If your doing it via e-mail/phone skip the visual questions if you can actually see the cat.. :p ) *Physical* Age: Sex: male/female Neutered: yes/no (Spayed) Color: Claws: Front/back Size: runt/small/medium/large pictures (if any) *History* Wounds/Viruses/Deformaties: No/Yes, please specify History: Immunization (Deworming etc) Once you have your new pet, here are some things to consider purcahsing. I checked petsmart.com for most of these, your local store should sell sim...

Life Questions

One of the questions about life is, is this all there is? Is there more to this existence than what we see? At first glance, one would tend to say no, but that is only Man's ignorance. To break it down, now that technology is so wide spread, we have wireless networks, 10's of thousands of megabits of data all around us. Yet, we cannot see it, and without the right equipment, we cannot send nor receive this vast amount of data, I believe, this is the same theory can be applied to anything else. As much as we think that we are "only human" most of our bodies work off of electrical signals. How much of what we think and perceive is actually real? It makes sense that if we did have said equipment to interpret and interact with all the things around us, we haven't used it in a 100's of years, it's not suprising that it happens, and less suprising that we have little control over when / how it happens. Some random things I found on the internet: - It is Negative...

Testing Ubuntu Server and Networking, PHP5,Apache2,MySQL

Want to test out Ubuntu? Get VMware Player and this Virtual Appliance : Networking In Ubuntu 6.10, Edgy Eft: I don't cover DHCP here, I don't know why you'd want that for a server... Setting a static IP in ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft : Assuming your NIC is eth1, if yours is eth0, use that instead :) Edit /etc/network/interfaces and add the following at the bottom: auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address [IP] netmask [netmask - i.e. 255.255.255.0] network [network ip, i.e. 192.168.0.0] broadcast [broadcast address, eg. 192.168.0.255] gateway [gateway IP (Router/Modem)] dns-nameservers [DNS-ServersIPs] Now to see the changes #sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart PHP5 / Apache 2 / MySQL with Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft I haven't fully tested this yet. I Got PHP5, Apache2, and MySQL up and going in seconds.. (I'm scared too) You'll probably want to be able to shell in: #sudo apt-get install ssh Next, we'll install MySQL 5 #sudo apt-get install mysql-server Next we'll inst...

Sippin on Gin and Juice...

I really should save all my digg favourites, meh, another day, another lost link. Come to think of it (and after some googling) back in 2004 google was indexing about 4 million sites, by the looks of, it seems it's indexing more than twice that amount today. BF2142 works finally, and all I had to do was buy the DVD copy, now why didn't I do this when I first bought the game is beyond me, oh and is it ever smooooth, at last! I'm going to have to try turning up the FSAA a bit more, see how far we can go, but I have no way to see how many FPS I'm getting unless I install fraps or something. Backups, you never realize how important they are, until you need them. Isn't that the truth, you'd be suprised how many production networks in large companies do not take enough back ups (or any at all!) Oh well, off to endulge in a backwoods.

Sexy Time!

OK, well it looks like my old GeForce 6800 has kicked the bucket, I've replaced it with a marked down GeForce 7900 GTX. The card is MASSIVE and nearly covers my SATA connections, and the northbridge (The old card sat over the northbridge as well) We've moved to the Hammer (Hamilton) one thing is, this ain't scarlem. The 20 minute drive to work in the morning is a welcome change (from the hour+ drive I used to have to make) but the place is nice, got some good deals on some merchandise (Thank you The Brick -- Don't pay a cent for a year or something -- There goes my bonus..) Finally my disdane for EA has grown to astronomical proportions. Fine I have to download your stupid game over and over and watch the install fail, the game not start, or get a duplicate GUID, so after re-downloading the stupid game OVER AND OVER I get some message that EA is blocking my installation attempt to prevent piracy, yes, because I'm going to pirate your piece of shit game, then attempt...
